KauhaleKai-“Village by the Sea”, is a magnificent private residence perched above Kauna’oa Bay at the Mauna Kea Resort on the beautiful Kohala Coast of the Big Island. The home was designed and organized for tropical livability as its own “Village” with a series of modern tropical pavilions, all with steep hipped roofs and linked by a series of outdoor gardens and walkways. With 6,674 square foot, 5-bedroom, 5-bathroom, 2 half baths, and over 10,500 sf of indoor/outdoor living area, Kauhale Kai is comprised of seven separate pavilions; among them is the main gathering pavilion with living, kitchen and pantry, a floating dining pavilion, outdoor living pavilion, a master bedroom pavilion, and two family and guest pavilions. An architectural pool and water features are integral to connecting the pavilions with the outdoor and indoor spaces.

The center piece of the design is the floating glass-walled dining room with its 10’ tall bronzed steel sliding doors connected by a shade trellis to the center oculus over a circular water feature. The outdoor living pavilion has coral clad columns and is visually connected by a shade trellis to the water feature. The Master Bedroom pavilion includes a study, sitting room, dressing areas, indoor baths and an outdoor bath garden. The two family and guest pavilions each included two bedrooms, two bathrooms with outdoor showers and a spacious sitting/entertainment room; one has an additional bath to allow the sitting room to be used as overflow sleeping accommodations.

Interior finish materials include clear cedar ceilings, local Ohia hardwood cabinetry, sand grain veneer plaster, travertine stone and Ohia floors. Exterior materials include copper shingle roofs, steel doors and windows, integral color cement plaster, cedar eaves, coral stone columns and travertine pavers.

Situated on a very private 2-acre site at the end of a cul-de-sac within the gated Kauna’oa at Mauna Kea community, Kauhale Kai has sweeping views of the ocean, the Kohala-Kona coastline, the island of Maui and year-round sunsets. The beautiful white sand beach fronting the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is less than a 10-minute walk or 2-minute golf cart ride away.

Kauhale Kai is perhaps one of the most magnificent private homes ever to come available on the Island of Hawaii.
